COLLEGE PARK, Md.- Freshman Sean Kane (West Chester, Pa.) tossed a complete game, two-hit shutout to lead Maryland to a 7-0 victory over NC State Saturday afternoon at Shipley Field. Kane retired the last 11 batters he faced and he held the Wolfpack hitless for the final 5.2 innings of the game. The complete game shutout was the first by a Maryland pitcher since Joe Hart blanked NC State 3-0 on May 5, 2000.

The victory for the Terps completed the three-game sweep of the Wolfpack. The last time a Maryland team swept an ACC opponent at Shipley Field was April 29-May 1, 1994, when the Terps won three in a row over Virginia.

The Terrapins used the long ball to give Kane all the run support he would need on the day. In the second, Kyle George (Bel Air, Md.) belted his second home run of the season, a two-run shot, to give Maryland a 2-0 lead.


In the third, Jason Maxey (Columbia, Md.) continued his power surge at the plate as he ripped a two-run home run to left center to give the Terrapins a 4-0 lead. The home run for Maxey was his 14th of the season, which places him in a tie for seventh on the single-season home run list at Maryland. The 14 home runs for Maxey are also the most a freshman has ever hit at Maryland in one season.

The four-run cushion was more than enough for Kane, who was spectacular all game. The 6-6 freshman right-hander set new career-highs with his nine innings pitched and five strikeouts. Kane faced just three batters over the minimum as he held the nation's third-best hitting team in check.

The Terps scored another two runs in the seventh and one in the eighth to finish off the Pack, 7-0.

The win was also Kane's first of his career as he improved to 1-0 with the victory. NC State starter Mike Prochaska lasted seven innings and surrendered six runs on six hits to fall to 4-2.

The win was the Terps' fifth straight as Maryland improved to 32-19 overall and 6-15 in the ACC. The loss dropped NC State to 26-24 and 4-17 in the conference.

The Terps return to action Tuesday when they host Coppin State. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
